For the second time as Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, I’ve submitted a formal request to the Speaker of the House to open Public Accounts Committee (PAC) proceedings to the public and to broadcast them on the Parliamentary Channel.
This would bring us in line with established practice across the region and internationally, where oversight committees are regularly broadcast and archived on public online platforms such as YouTube. To date, we have received no response.
We find no acceptable reason why the work of a Standing Committee—particularly one charged with examining the use of public funds—should not be open to public view. We anticipate the Speaker’s cooperation.
Be assured that the PAC will maintain a full and active schedule throughout the current session of Parliament, meeting regularly to scrutinize the use of public funds and ensure accountability.
The previous PAC was already well advanced on several critical matters of public importance during the previous parliamentary term. The Committee intends to bring them to a conclusion in a structured and timely manner within the next several weeks.
The public can expect imminent reports on key national matters, including:
- The CARIFTA Games;
- The Bahamas Games; and
- Public procurement practices across government.
Of course, new members will be afforded the opportunity to review and contribute to the body of evidence and testimony already gathered, ensuring that the Committee’s conclusions reflect both continuity and thorough oversight.
The pace and frequency of the PAC’s work will reflect the seriousness of the matters under review.
