It is deeply troubling and disappointing that at the very start of the new school year, students and staff at Freeport Primary School are being forced to work and learn in deplorable and unsafe conditions. Reports and firsthand observations confirm visible structural damage, leaks from the roof, and the presence of mold in classrooms and the main office. Even worse, the school is infested with roaches, rats, and pigeons, creating serious health and safety hazards for everyone on campus.
These conditions are not only unacceptable but also a direct threat to the well-being of our children and educators. It is outrageous that after an entire summer meant for repairs and maintenance, our schools are reopening in such a disgraceful state.
We understand that the Ministry of Education contractor responsible for repairs at Freeport Primary School this year is a key member of the governing party. This raises serious questions about conflict of interest, accountability, and the standards used in the selection of contractors.
We also demand answers as to why the Minister for Grand Bahama, Hon. Ginger Moxey, is reportedly involved in the selection of school repair contractors. Are these contractors properly licensed and vetted by the Grand Bahama Port Authority? Who ensures the quality of their work, and who will take responsibility for these failures?
This is a sad day for Grand Bahama. Our children and teachers deserve safe, clean, and functional learning environments, not neglect and political favoritism.
We are calling on the Minister of Education to act immediately to:
- Conduct a full inspection of Freeport Primary and all schools that still have issues.
- Hold those responsible for substandard work accountable.
- Ensure immediate remediation of health and safety issues at affected schools.
Grand Bahama deserves better. Our children deserve better. We demand urgent action now.
