Opposition Demands Urgent Assistance for Grand Bahama
[Freeport, The Bahamas] – The need for government assistance in the wake of the fires in Grand Bahama is both urgent and undeniable. Families have experienced the loss or severe damage of their homes and vehicles, while businesses, particularly in the industrial sector, have suffered devastating setbacks. In times of crisis, it is the Government’s responsibility to provide swift, meaningful support. Implementing a comprehensive assistance program is not merely a policy choice; it is a moral obligation. The people of Grand Bahama must not be left behind in the aftermath of this disaster.
One particularly tragic case underscores the urgency. A devastated constituent who owns property in the industrial sector contacted us after losing one of his buildings in the catastrophic fire that swept through the area on Friday. The structure and several vehicles were destroyed within moments. What makes this loss even more distressing is that there was no water available in the area to fight the fire. Uninsured, he now asks the question, “What help is the Government going to provide?” His call for assistance echoes the cries of many. The Government must act—swiftly and decisively—to bring relief, restore hope, and prevent future tragedies of this kind.
“The scale of destruction unfolding in Grand Bahama is heartbreaking,” said East Grand Bahama MP Kwasi Thompson. “Instead of squandering resources, the Government must provide the resources to offer urgent assistance.”
We also extend our deepest gratitude to the brave firefighters and residents who selflessly volunteered their time, heavy equipment, and water trucks to battle the fires. Their courage, quick action, and unwavering commitment saved lives and protected property under extreme conditions. These heroes stepped up when official resources fell short, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed.
However, this crisis has exposed a critical gap in our response infrastructure. It highlights the need for the Government to establish a properly organized and well-resourced Volunteer Firefighters Program. With structured training, adequate equipment, and coordinated support, these volunteers can become a formidable supplement to first responders, capable of responding swiftly and effectively when disasters strike.
Thompson added, “Every delay in action is putting more lives and livelihoods in danger. The people of The Bahamas need a government that prioritizes their safety over self-indulgence, and we need action now.”
