Rolle Reacts to 2026 Independence Budget

Like many Bahamians I recall with fondness our national 50th Anniversary of Independence celebrations and I congratulate the organizers for what proved to be another proud moment for all Bahamians.

As we approach our 53rd Anniversary I welcome another high-quality celebration that we anticipate will hit the high notes required as we honour our sovereignty and celebrate our identity.

Sadly, there continue to be questions that linger regarding the difference between the national budget and expenditure for the 50th Anniversary celebrations.  Going forward we must ensure that greater attention and insistence is placed on delivering for the Bahamian people the levels of transparency and accountability which they reasonably expect and to which they are undoubtedly entitled regarding celebrations and similar events.  We should seek to not only deliver great and inspiring moments but also to deliver transparent accounting and a clear understanding of how the people’s money is being spent. While the pride we feel for our nation is infinite and, oftentimes, particularly at these occasions, overwhelming, our national resources, sadly, are not.

We, in positions of authority, must always be prepared to, and freely and voluntarily, account for our stewardship.  In so doing, we limit the distractions and lessen the potential for divisions among us at times when we should be uniting, celebrating, and focusing on the fact that we are Bahamians.

As the Shadow Minster for Culture, Arts and Heritage, I believe that our foundation as a nation remains strong and that our self-confidence as a united people can only strengthen our country’s future as we build it together.   This is why I look forward to meeting with the Honourable Minister to hear and discuss her thoughts and the Government’s plans, and to share my ownideas and our vision, which includes the establishment and promotion of a dynamic and interactive National Cultural Calendar that broadens engagement and entrenches Governmental support and promotion of the cultural community.
