The Opposition fully supports the decision to suspend the review of the Grand
Bahama Power Company’s proposed rate increase.
During a recent meeting with the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the Grand
Bahama Power Company, we expressed our shared frustration with the persistent
service interruptions, which continue to place an intolerable burden on the
economic stability and prospects of the people of Grand Bahama.
We also reiterated our opposition to any increase in the electricity rate and echoed
consumers’ complaints about the damage outages have caused to equipment and
appliances and, in some cases, loss of revenue.
The Opposition stands united with all Grand Bahamians in affirming that utility
providers on our island must significantly improve both the quality of their services
and their communication with the public before any consideration of new
agreements can proceed.
We would’ve preferred the Press Statement to simply say that, given the current
challenges and public concerns raised, now isn’t the right time for a rate increase.
