Today, we honour the men and women who struggled, sacrificed, and stood firm so this country could take its rightful place as a sovereign country.
Some were on the front lines. Others worked quietly, behind the scenes, but all played a role in shaping the nation we live in today. Majority Rule belongs to all Bahamians.
History also tells us that many who helped form that first Majority Rule government either helped establish or later joined the Free National Movement.
And that matters, because it means the spirit of freedom and equality are embedded in our party’s DNA.
Celebrating this milestone reminds us that democracy must be protected and strengthened in every generation.
That means accountability in how the people’s business is conducted.
Transparency in decision-making.
Government in the sunshine, not in the shadows.
It means protecting the freedom of the press.
Defending the right of Bahamians to speak freely without fear of victimization and demanding honesty and openness in the halls of Parliament.
These are not abstract ideals. They are the daily work of democracy.
So as we commemorate Majority Rule Day 2026, the Free National Movement recommits itself to the never-ending fight for Bahamian rights, and to inspiring our people to live up to our civic responsibilities every day..
Let us honour the past, not just with words, but with action.
Let us protect what was earned through sacrifice.
And let us never, ever take our democracy for granted.
