In the past few days, there have been two killings involving off-duty officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF).
One incident involved an American citizen, who is expecting a child with his wife. Another incident involved “a man was allegedly shot and killed after he reportedly attacked an off-duty officer with a cutlass.”
The Official Opposition joins the calls for a thorough and accountable investigations into both deaths. Prime Minister Philip Davis says he has also asked for an investigation.
We note that most of officers of the RBPF serve diligently and with courage. But no officer is immune from accountability and the full force of the law pending a proper and transparent investigation.
The Opposition wishes to state again that promises of investigations on a range of matters by this government are often public relations exercises that lead to nowhere.
Even as the Davis Administration talks about the rule of law, the rules often do not seem to apply to certain people and the law does not take its full course. Instead of statements we need action.
Where are the results of the investigations on allegations by the U.S. of cocaine smuggling through The Bahamas involving RBPF officers and a Royal Bahamas Defense Force officer?
What happened to the investigation over immigration matters related to former Minister of Immigration, Keith Bell? Where are the results all these years later.
What about the incident over the alleged encounter between now minister of Energy and Transport, JoBeth Coleby Davis, and a police officer, who accused her of hitting him with her vehicle? What are the results of the investigation?
The failure to fully investigate a range of allegations of misconduct is typical of a government lacking in integrity and respect for the standards of good governance and the rule of law.
