Free National Movement Chairman Dr. Duane Sands issued a strong statement today outlining
the Progressive Liberal Party’s “Top 10 Procurement Failures,” calling into question the Davis
administration’s handling of public funds and its repeated disregard for accountability.
“You can’t trust anything the PLP says on procurement. The PLP has a lot to say about
procurement and value for money. But their record shows you can’t believe a single thing they
say.”
“Let me outline ten of their most notable failures:
1. Claiming ‘administrative error’ when the government was caught offering a no-bid $183
million contract to an ally of the PLP.
2. Awarding another $180 million no-bid contract to the same allies for work only expected to
cost $100 million.
3. Buying ambulances that ill people couldn’t fit in or that couldn’t carry essential emergency
equipment.
4. Signing a secret 21-year seabed lease for moorings in the Exumas and elsewhere, linked to a
senior official’s spouse, then cancelling it after public outcry.
5. Consistently ignoring their legal obligations under the Public Procurement Act.
6. Increasing the bill for government travel by over $20 million.
7. Paying a $1 million ‘break-up fee’ for an energy deal that collapsed.
8. Spending almost a quarter of a billion dollars on consultants across government in just one
year, with little value to the Bahamian people.
9. Allocating $2.5 million for a private plane for the Prime Minister.
10. Doing a deal that lets SpaceX pollute our waters for almost no financial benefit.”
“You can’t trust the PLP with your money or your family’s money. They simply don’t care
because it’s not their money, but all Bahamians should care because every dollar wasted is a
dollar less for our underfunded schools, hospitals, and emergency services.
The PLP record shows you can’t believe a single thing they say or trust them to govern.”
