Clint Watson cannot continue to serve as General Manager of ZNS while actively seeking political office for the Progressive Liberal Party. He should have resigned the moment he declared his partisan political intentions, which have clearly clouded his judgment and actions.
This is not a question of personal ambition or political rights. Every Bahamian is entitled to participate in the political process. This is a question of fairness, a glaring conflict of interest, and whether the head of the national broadcaster can remain in office while engaging in nakedly partisan political activity.
By policy and by long-standing standards governing public institutions, the General Manager of ZNS cannot be seen to be involved in politics. The moment Mr. Watson entered the PLP’s nomination process and appeared publicly at party headquarters, and declared that his objective was to run as a PLP, he placed himself in direct conflict with the obligation of neutrality required of his office.
ZNS is a public institution funded by the Bahamian people. Its credibility depends on fairness, balance, and independence from political influence. That credibility is compromised when its chief executive is actively pursuing a political future with the governing party, regardless of whether a formal nomination has been secured.
Mr. Watson’s suggestion that he would resign only if nominated misses the point entirely. The conflict did not begin at nomination. It began the moment he declared a partisan political position while continuing to lead a state-owned broadcaster. The appearance of bias alone is sufficient to erode public confidence, because public confidence is essential to the mission of ZNS.
It is also worth remembering that while in Opposition, the Progressive Liberal Party repeatedly demanded fairness and balance in media reporting. Now in government, it has turned our national broadcaster into a partisan political machine, reminiscent of the days when ZNS was a full-time propaganda agency for the PLP.
Thankfully, it was the FNM that liberated the broadcast media from a state-controlled monopoly. We trust that, in the interest of fairness, ZNS will report on this press release.
The responsible and appropriate course of action is clear. Clint Watson must resign immediately in order to protect the integrity of ZNS and uphold the basic principles of fairness and accountability that the Bahamian people expect.
