Bahamians, while the government continues to speak about how strong the economy is, 279 workers at the Grand Lucayan are being told that by February 27th, their paychecks will stop.
Two hundred and seventy nine mothers and fathers. Caregivers. Families who must now figure out how to survive without income.
If this economy is so strong, what happens to these 279 families? Who pays their rent, their mortgages, their light bills, their medical expenses?
Some of these same workers have already gone weeks without pay twice while the government delayed and made promises. Now they are being told severance will come “by month’s end.” But hope does not buy groceries, and promises do not keep the power on.
This government found $17 million to subsidize an empty hotel. It celebrates a $120 million deal. It talks about vision and transformation. But where is the plan for the people?
Where is the retraining programme? Where is the transition support? Where is the guarantee that Grand Bahamians will be first in line for whatever comes next?
You cannot claim economic success while 279 families are being pushed into uncertainty.
If this is what a “strong economy” looks like, then something is deeply wrong.
Families without paychecks cannot survive on promises.
Leadership means protecting people before protecting deals. It means planning before celebrating. And it means putting working Bahamians first. That is who we stand with. We work for you, not the few.
