Within the past two weeks, two reported near miss incidents involving aircraft, including one at Exuma International Airport, prompted a Serious Safety Concern advisory from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority to the Civil Aviation Authority of The Bahamas. These developments have understandably unsettled residents who rely heavily on air travel for daily life.
Days earlier, an emergency medical flight was reportedly unable to land in Exuma due to runway lighting failure. The patient awaiting evacuation tragically passed away after the aircraft was forced to return to New Providence. That incident has intensified questions about the reliability of critical-infrastructure.
This is not abstract for our community, Moxey Rolle said. Exuma families depend on safe and reliable air access for travel, commerce, and lifesaving medical emergencies. When there are breakdowns, the consequences are real and deeply personal.
Moxey Rolle is urging the Government and the Minister responsible to confirm that all aviation safety systems and emergency procedures have been thoroughly reviewed, that any deficiencies have been corrected, and that residents will be kept fully informed going forward.
The people of Exuma deserve clarity, accountability, and confidence that every safeguard is in place, she said. When it comes to matters of safety and life, silence is not an option.
