The Free National Movement is deeply concerned by the Prime Minister’s recent dismissal of reports involving fraudulent Bahamian passports, NIB cards, and voter registration documents as anything less than a serious national issue.
When the Prime Minister of this country stands before the Bahamian people and suggests that these incidents do not represent a systemic threat, he is not only minimising legitimate public concern, he is demonstrating, once again, a troubling disconnect from the realities that ordinary Bahamians are living every day.
For months, this party has been raising the alarm. The FNM has consistently called attention to irregularities and discrepancies in the voter registration process. We have urged this Government to act with urgency and transparency. Those calls have largely gone unanswered. The Prime Minister’s recent comments are not reassuring; they are yet another example of a government that is comfortable with the status quo and resistant to accountability.
This matters enormously in the present moment. With a general election on the horizon and the rollout of new biometric voter cards now underway, the integrity of our electoral process must be beyond question. The Bahamian people deserve a registration system they can trust, and they deserve a government that takes seriously any threat to that trust, no matter how inconvenient that may be.
The concerns being raised by citizens about illegal immigration and identity fraud are not fringe anxieties. They are grounded, reasonable, and deserving of a substantive government response.
The FNM is calling on the Government to provide a full and transparent accounting of the reported incidents involving fraudulent identity documents. We are further calling on the Parliamentary Registration Department to ensure that the biometric voter registration process is subject to the highest standards of verification and oversight.
Every Bahamian’s vote is sacred, and every Bahamian’s identity deserves protection. This Government has a responsibility to rise to that standard, and the Bahamian people are watching.
