In 1967, The Bahamas achieved majority rule, and in 1973, we became an independent
nation. These were important milestones in our country’s history.
August 19, 1992, marks another significant milestone for the Free National Movement
and many Bahamians. The peaceful transfer of power to an alternate group of minds in
the first FNM administration was a watershed moment in Bahamian history that helped
entrench and safeguard democracy.
After governing The Bahamas for a quarter of a century, PLP governance had clearly
derailed the nation from a path that could have led to greater national achievement. The
party embraced a cult of personality and strayed from many of the ideals of an
independent Bahamas.
August 19, 1992, represented a turning point—a day of deliverance.
The Hubert Ingraham-led FNM set a new standard in governance. An administration
committed to reform and modernization rescued our country from national drift and
malaise. The principles of transparency and openness became a hallmark of governance
in the sunshine.
The men and women who labored to make August 19 a reality are recognized as Freedom
Fighters committed to freedom, opportunity, and social justice. These ideals still animate
the FNM today.
The 1992 election victory was not just for the FNM, but for all Bahamians. It was a victory
that ushered in a new era of good governance and accountability after decades of mass
corruption, economic collapse, and many threats to our freedoms.
The FNM restored our economy and good name. We expanded freedom for women and
all Bahamians, including freeing the broadcast media from state control. The common
man no longer feared the PLP’s intimidation and victimization.
Today, as in 1992, the people have a choice between an FNM committed to a better
future for all Bahamians and a PLP that has yet to learn from its mistakes.
Every year, we pause to recognize the significance of the enormous contributions of all
who labored to realize the founding ideals of our Free National Movement. The principles
and values that led to that victory will always inspire us.
