OPPOSITION LEADER URGES GOVERNMENT NOT TO DISCONTINUE SERZ CONCESSIONS

Oct 7, 2022

It is regrettable that despite the many pleas by Abaconians and Grand Bahamians, in desperate need of assistance toward rebuilding their lives and businesses post-Dorian, The Davis Administration appears determined to discontinue the Special Economic Recovery Zone (SERZ) concessions left in place by the Minnis Administration.

The SERZ Order of 2019 permits the duty free and VAT free importation of goods and materials into Abaco, the Abaco Cays, Grand Bahama, Sweeting’s Cay, Deep Water Cay and Water Cay.

As we all know, Hurricane Dorian, was a renowned catastrophic event, which decimated the second and third largest economies of the country. It is, therefore, our considered view that the Government must do all within its powers to assist the recovery of these economies.

As such, we call upon the Davis Administration to extend the Order for at least another year, so that Bahamians and their businesses might have a fighting chance to recover.

The lingering effects of Dorian, COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine makes it all the more difficult for struggling Abaconians and Grand Bahamian families to rebuild their lives in the current economic climate.
