Government Takes Action, Davis Spews Rhetoric

Feb 17, 2021

The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the government’s historic provision of unemployment and other benefits:

“For nearly a year, our FNM government has sought to protect the health and safety of Bahamians during the global, COVID-19 pandemic, which has wreaked havoc on families, taking lives, ruining gatherings and adversely impacting economies worldwide. While our FNM Government’s pandemic response measures have kept cases comparatively low – earning praise from the global healthcare community – our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, knows that hard work continues to fight the virus and start the recovery.

“Since the outset of the pandemic, Prime Minister Minnis and his Administration have acted, leading a historic effort to mitigate the troubling toll it placed on so many Bahamians. Since last year when the virus first hit, nearly $200 million has been paid out in unemployment assistance and benefits for Bahamians struggling during this unprecedented global challenge. These expenditures represent the most money ever spent on unemployment benefits. In addition, our government has spent millions on food assistance programs.

“The Minnis Administration knows there are no simple solutions or easy fixes but understand that leadership means meeting the challenges, no matter how dire they are. And they are doing that regardless of the broken record, politically motivated daily attacks coming from Brave Davis and his PLP. Instead of leadership, they have offered up a dizzying round of contradictory attacks – one week the government’s pandemic response measures go too far, the next week Brave’s complaining not enough measures are being taken. Never helpful and always looking for a political angle, even as lives are at stake. Bahamians shudder to think where we’d be if Brave still clung to power. Unimaginable.

“Regardless, the Minnis Administration will stay focused on saving lives, while also providing the assistance and benefits that are vital to help families get through this crisis. They are also continuing to work on stimulating job growth, diversifying the economy, pursuing critical infrastructure projects and improving our education system. Because one day this pandemic will be behind us and they know the important work of building a better future for everyone must continue. That’s what true leaders do – Brave and his team should take notes.”
